Garmin Handheld GPS

TPC supports Garmin GPS devices. You can send and receive waypoints, track log points and routes.

What's Supported

TPC uses the GARMIN GPS Interface Specification, December 6, 1999, Drawing Number:001-00063-00 Rev.3. This specification allows TPC to talk with any GARMIN GPS device that supports this interface.

This interface transfers data in packets which TPC supports. The packet data depends on the protocol and product specific data types.

This specification is available on Garmin's web site www.garmin.com.

Waypoints vs. Routes vs. Track Log

When you transfer waypoints, the points are transferred in their sorted order, based on the waypoint number or label.

Routes are sequences of waypoints in which the sequence is important. When you transfer routes, the waypoints are transferred in the sequence defined by the routes.

The track log differs from Waypoints and Routes in that only the position and time are recorded.

Setting up a Garmin GPS III

The GPS III is discussed here as an example of how to prepare the GARMIN device to communicate with TPC.

Importing Waypoints

When the transfer is complete, TPC will display the number of points that were transferred in the Import dialog. The GARMIN will display Data Transfer Complete and prompt you to press Enter to Acknowledge.

TPC will convert the Latitude and Longitude of the waypoints to the current survey grid. If you requested TPC to store the waypoints in a traverse, the Traverses Manager will display the new traverse. The imported points also show up in the Points Manager. If you don't want the traverse you can delete it. The points will remain in the Points Manager.

Exporting Waypoints

If a traverse or traverses already define the data you want to export, go to the Traverses Manager. If you want to export just certain points, go to the Points Manager.

TPC uses the current grid settings to convert the grid coordinates to Latitude and Longitude.

Importing Routes

GARMIN GPS devices can store sequences of points as Routes. These routes correlate well with the Traverses in TPC, with each imported route creating its own traverse.

TPC will convert the Latitude and Longitude of the waypoints to the current survey grid.

Each route creates a traverse and names the traverse using the route header data (i.e. the traverse name ‘Route 0, 001-009' is derived from route 0 which includes waypoints 001 through 009).

The imported points also show up in the Points Manager. If you don't want the traverse you can delete it. The points will remain in the Points Manager.

Exporting Routes

GARMIN GPS devices can store sequences of points as Routes. These routes correlate well with the Traverses in TPC, with each imported route creating its own traverse.

If a traverse or traverses already define the routes you want to export, go to the Traverses Manager. You cannot export routes from the Points Manager since routes are defined by traverses.

TPC uses the current grid settings to convert the grid coordinates to Latitude and Longitude.

Importing Track Log Points

TPC will convert the Latitude and Longitude of the waypoints to the current survey grid. If you requested TPC to store the track log points in a traverse, the Traverses Manager will display the new traverse. The imported points also show up in the Points Manager. If you don't want the traverse you can delete it. The points will remain in the Points Manager.

Exporting Track Log Points

If a traverse or traverses already define the data you want to export, go to the Traverses Manager. Since a track log is a defined sequence of points, you will generally export the traverse or traverses that contain the desired sequence. However, if you want to export just certain points based on their point label sequence, you can export from the Points Manager.

TPC does not send point labels or descriptions using the Track Log protocol, just the positions. The GARMIN GPS device ignores any track log times stored in the transferred data. This helps it differentiate between track log data it generates itself and track log data it gets from another device.

TPC uses the current grid settings to convert the grid coordinates to Latitude and Longitude.
