Reports

When TPC creates information from a View, a dialog or a command, this information is called a report. The report is appended to the Report View or Message View, depending on which edition of TPC you have. In the Report or Message view, you can edit the text of the report, cut/copy/past to and from other applications, and preview or print the report.

Reports are appended to the current Report/Message View starting with a heading in double brackets. For example, the Stakeout Report starts with the heading [[ Stakeout Report ]]. Subsections within the report are in single brackets.

Append to Report/Message View

To append the data in a view to the Report/Message View, open the view and choose Edit | Append to Report View or Edit | Append to Message View. TPC will create the report and append it to the Report/Message View, separating the new report from the existing data by a few lines and beginning the new report with a report heading in double brackets (i.e. [[Traverse - Record data per CSF#14396]] ).

Adding Dialog Summaries

Many dialogs, like the intersection dialog, have a Summary button that writes information about the operation to the current report. The information starts with a section heading in double brackets (i.e. [[ Intersection ]]) followed by the information.

If your edition of TPC does not include a Report View, the summary is written to the Message View.

Appending To The Report View

As you build a report in TPC, you will at times want to append the data from another view, like the Traverse View or Closure View, to the report. TPC makes this easy. Just open the other view and choose Edit | Append to Report View.

When TPC appends another view to the Report View it adds a few blank lines and then appends the report heading like [[ Lot 4 Traverse 9,748SqFt ]] followed by the report data. This makes it easy to keep track of the data once it comes into the report.

Other reports, like the Traverse Report, also have an Append to Report View command.

If your edition of TPC does not include a Report View, the information is appended to the Message View.

Formatting the Report

You can change the page size, margins, orientation, font, font size and color of a report before printing it. You can also cut/copy/paste text between a report and other Windows programs. Starting in TPC V8.5 you can also select the word wrap option that suits you best. Just choose View, Word Wrap to display the dialog.

Using Report Data in a Drawing

You can copy data from any report and paste it into any text object in a drawing. This is a great way to put a legal description or offset data into the drawing.

Managing Reports

The Report View can create and use any number of reports. Each report is stored in its own file with the .RTF extension. The default report file name is the same as the survey file name with the .RTF extension. If your survey file is JOB1.TRV, the default report file name will be JOB1.RTF. Additional reports require unique file names.

Only one report, called the current report, can be open at a time. Reports can be created or opened via the Tools menu.

To Save the Current Report Under a New File Name

From the Report View, choose Tools | Save Report As. From the Save As dialog, select the path (usually the same as the survey file), enter a file name and choose Save. TPC writes the report to the file and updates the Report View to show the file name.

To Save the Current Report

As you make changes to the current report you are updating the report in memory. The report is not written to the report file until you save it. To update the current report file choose Tools | Save Report.

To Open an Existing Report

The Report View can work with any number of reports, but only one report can be active at a time. This report is called the Current report. To open an existing report and make it the Current report, choose Tools | Open Report..., highlight the report filename in the Open dialog and choose Open.

To Start a new Report

To start a new report, choose Tools | New Report. If you have made changes to the current report since it was last saved, TPC will prompt you to save it. TPC will create a new report, using the name UNTITLED.RTF. The first time you save the new report, TPC will prompt you for a file name.

Message View

The Report View is available only in the Professional Edition. The other editions use the Message View, which does not allow multiple files or reports but can accomplish many of the same things as the Report View.

Report Commands

Some commands create reports and append them to the Report/Message View. Examples are the Stakeout Report, Station Offset Report and Legal Description Writer.

The following are reports available in some or all editions of TPC Desktop.

Survey Report - reports survey information like the creation date and number of points.
Traverse Report - generates a user-defined report for each selected traverse.
Stakeout Report - generates a cut sheet for selected stakeout points.
Station Offset Report - generates a station/offset report for the current traverse.
Legal Description Report - generates a legal description for a traverse.
Import Details Report - generates information for each line of data imported.
