These videos were developed for a BLM Training Session 3-26-2012. They use BLM job, G2346 to walk through common everyday tasks using TPC Desktop. They are also intended to be a general reference to using TPC Desktop for the PLSS.

Step 1. Download the outline, map and sample files (updated 7/22/14)

Step 2. Watch a video

Step 3. Follow the outline and repeat the video lesson on your own

Starting a new survey – create a new survey and set the coordinate reference system and project factors

Importing Trimble geodetic points – import geodetic points from Trimble Business Center

Importing CMM geodetic points – import geodetic points exported from CMM’s COGO list

Entering geodetic control points – enter geodetic points directly into TPC, either in the Points manager or the Traverse View

Establishing basis of bearing – use imported geodetic points for your occupied station and backsight or enter a solar observations for a reference azimuth

Importing field data 1 – import field data from your data collector with automatic rotate/translate to geodetic control

Understanding traverses – learn about raw data, control point sequence, the status bar and tagging traverses in a drawing

Formatting traverses – create formats you can re-use for your PLSS data

Computing traverses – explore grid vs ground vs geodetic computations and their closures

Quick closure check with inverses – check your closures in seconds using random inverses and sorting by descriptions

Check closure of control loops – use the Closure View to check closing errors and customize your closure report

Cleaning up raw data – learn how TPC stores raw data from your data collector and how to edit it in the Traverse View

Intermediate least squares check – use LS to check your field data without updating the survey points

Importing field data 2 – this alternate method for import field data creates observations (OBS) to control points you tie in the field so you’re all set up for a Least Squares analysis

Creating individual control loops – if you want, you can separate out control loops that were imported from one main raw data file or you can import separate raw files for each loop

Adding a retrace traverse – TPC uses a retrace traverse to store your existing (found) corners for PLSS computations and to start your true line diagram and final plat

Adding a record traverse – store the GLO calls in a record traverse then use them in PLSS computations for lost corners. Learn how to enter GLO data in chains for feet.

Mixing record data and existing points – as you find corners/monuments, insert them into the record traverse and recompute record positions from the found corners to improve your searches

Finding points – learn how to find points, drill down through points piled on top of each other in a drawing, do a one-step zoom toggle to create separation and window extents

Creating a ‘search area’ traverse – create a plot, printouts and reports to help you search for corners and accessories

Computing 600420 via single proportion – learn how to to an easy single proportion using the Retrace and Record traverses

Computing 600420 manually – do the same SP computation manually

Computing 600460 via single proportion – it takes just a few steps to compute or recompute a 16th corner

Computing a geodetic center section – compute both a geodetic and a planar center sections and compare them

Computing center sixteenths by midpoint – a single command creates a geodetic midpoint

Computing Single Proportion through multiple lost corners – create record data with any number of courses to the nearest existing corner

Creating a True Line diagram – go from your working drawing to a true line diagram or start your plat

Introducing Smart Drawing Objects™ – the north arrow rotates with the drawing and the scale bar displays the new scale automatically

Exporting coordinates – send State Plane coordinate points back to your data collector

Exporting geodetics – send geodetic positions out to an ASCII file

Computing double proportion – use retrace and record traverses to make this so easy

Creating corner moves – generate corner move (stakeout) notes with alternate backsights

Compute offsets to true line – generate offsets from each random line point to the true line (latitude arc) and print out a report you can take to the field
