Drawing Data Manager (DDM)

The Drawing Data Manager exposes the data in a drawing in the familiar Tree structure (used in Windows explorer to display folders and sub-folders).

Sections like Title Block and Page shown here are called branches.  Individual items under each branch are called leaves.

Delineate Objects in the Drawing Data Manager (3:21) - Learn how delineate drawings objects from the Drawing Data Manager.

DDM Sections and Items

TPC includes sections for DDM items like Page, Layers, Traverses, Surfaces, Symbols, Blocks, Fonts, Tables, Dynamic Offsets, Miscellaneous drawing data and more.

Expand the section you want, then look for the item you want and expand it.

Click on any expanded section or item to collapse it.

Using the Drawing Data Manager

If you haven't used the DDM before, you'll find Using the Drawing Data Manager helpful.  It explains how to expand and contract the branches to find what you are looking for.  You also learn how to use drag-n-drop to manage drawing data.

Finding Drawing Data

One of the primary benefits of the DDM is finding drawing data. Using the Search Control is particularly helpful if you have been away from a drawing long enough to forget what's in it.  The delineation tools available from the DDM are worth their weight in gold.  Once you learn to do this, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.

You'll learn how to access any drawing data from it's object in the drawing, creating a seamless loop between the drawing and the DDM.

Managing Drawing Data

The DDM has some great conventions and tools to help you manage drawing data.  Drag-n-drop layers or drawing objects to change their drawing order, tag and untag layers, surfaces and traverse to add or remove drawing data in bulk or select a drawing object and convert it to survey data.

Modifying Drawing Data

You can modify drawing data simply by double-clicking a DDM item or right-clicking and choosing Properties. Double click a layer to open the Layer dialog. Or double click a traverse to open its Traverse View. You get the point. The DDM gives you access to everything in the drawing.

Cleaning Up Drawing Data

To clean up a drawing, you may want to delete unused blocks or delete unused fonts.  Cleaning up a large drawing can improve drawing performance.

Synchronizing the Drawing Data Manager

The Drawing Data Manager exposes one drawing at a time and it doesn't have to be the drawing in the Drawing View. However, you can change the drawing that is exposed conveniently through the following methods.

•From the Drawing Manager, select a drawing and choose Tools | Open Drawing | Drawing Data Manager.

•From the Drawing View choose Tools | Drawing Data.

•From the Drawing Data Manager choose Tools | Synchronize to Drawing View to expose the same drawing being displayed in the Drawing View.

Drawing Data Manager Items

We will use the terms Sections and Items to be anything displayed in the DDM. This could be a calibration, a layer, a drawing object, a point symbol and so on.

These are the items displayed in the DDM as branches (sections) and leaves (items).
