Hiding Objects - Best Practice for Individual Objects
As a rule, instead of setting an individual object to None, you should Hide it. See Hiding Drawing Objects.
TPC has a built-in mechanism to toggle showing hidden objects On or Off, allowing you to re-show any object that has been hidden. See Show Hidden Objects command.
Setting some Traverse Drawing Settings to None is different, and is discussed below.
Setting an Object to None
To set an object to None
•right click the object and choose Properties
•from the Line pull down list, choose None
•When you choose OK, the object will disappear in the drawing because it has no line type.
Some objects, like blockreferences and contour lines can not be set to None.
Identifying None Objects in the Drawing Data Manager
Objects set to None are listed in a warning section of the Drawing Data Manager
Objects that are set to None by their Traverse Drawing Settings are not included in this warning. It only includes objects that have been set to None manually.
To reset any of these none objects to something else
•select the object in the Drawing Data Manager
•right-click it and choose Reset Modified Attributes
To reset all of these none objects
•right click the warning This object type is set to None and choose Reset Modified Attributes and Hide. See Reset Modified Attributes command.
•at the prompt choose OK
•TPC will set any survey objects back to their Traverse Drawing Settings and hide them in the drawing
Beginning with TPC Desktop 2026, when you position the cursor over a None object, TPC draws that object in the selected accent color and displays its tooltip.
In the example shown here, the point symbol for survey point 1 has been set to None. But as the cursor is positioned over the point, TPC draws a rectangle for the point symbol, allowing you to work with it as if it was drawn without being set to None.
Resetting Modified Attributes of a None Object
Drawing objects created by traverses, like survey lines and point symbols, derive their attributes like line type and symbol, from the Traverse Drawing Settings.
If you want to draw the line or symbol, you probably want to use those Traverse Drawing Settings. To do this
•right-click the None object
•choose Modify Object | Reset Modified Attributes
or
•select the object in the Drawing Data Manager
•right-click it and choose Reset Modified Attributes
Setting Traverse Drawing Settings to None
It is acceptable practice, when needed, to set line types and symbols to None in the Traverse Drawing Settings. See Drawing Traverses.
Objects that are not drawn because their Traverse Drawing Settings was set to None are not the same as objects that have been manually set to None, overriding their original Traverse Drawing Settings.
When importing ASCII or GNSS points into TPC, you might want to plot just the point symbols and labels but not the connecting lines, to show a point plot of what was collected in the field. Later on, you can create traverses from those points using Point Codes or other methods. See Creating Traverses and Point Codes.
To do this, you simply set the line type to None for the control point settings.
Importing Shape Files Into a Drawing
When importing polygon or polyline shapes into a survey, TPC sets the Point Symbol to None and turns off all point labels in the Traverse Drawing Settings for the imported traverses. These shape files can sometimes create hundreds of traverses and these settings reduce the drawing time. You can then add them back into any traverse you want.
