Exporting Drawings as Shape Files

A drawing contains many more kinds of objects than there are shape types and shape files must consist of one shape type only. As a result, TPC must convert its drawing objects to a corresponding shape type. Points and Block References get converted to Point shapes. Lines, Polylines, Traverses, Contours, etc. get converted to Polyline shapes.

When you export a drawing as a shape file, you can choose to export the Point shapes or the Polyline shapes. If you need booth, you will need to export twice; once for each shape.

•Open the drawing you want to export.

•Choose Tools | Export Drawing As to display the Export dialog.

•Select ESRI Shape from the Type list.

•Enter a file name for the export file or choose Browse.

•Choose Settings, select the Export options you want and choose OK. In particular, you will need to choose between exporting Point shapes or Polyline shapes.

•From the Export dialog, choose Export.

Exporting Point Shapes

When you export Point shapes from a drawing, each point symbol object creates a Point record in the shape file. End points of lines and vertices of polylines are not exported as points.

You can export just the points referenced by the selected traverses by repeating the steps above, but selecting the Points option in the Settings dialog.

Exporting Polyline Shapes

When you export Polyline shapes from a drawing, TPC writes each tagged traverse to its own Polyline record plus any other drawing object than can be represented as a Polyline shape. In the database file, each traverse creates a record that contains the traverse name. Each polyline in the drawing creates a record in the database file.

Exporting Elevations

You can tell TPC to export Polyline / Point shapes (without elevations) or PolylilneZ / PointZ shapes (with elevations).

See Exporting Shape Elevations.

Exported DBF Data

When exporting drawings, TPC exports some of the data fro each drawing object to the shape DBF file.

•Name - the object name, like Point, Line, Polyline, Rectangle or traverse name (when exporting traverses)

•Layer - the drawing layer the object was on

•Line type - the object line type name

•Color - the object color

See Shape Data Base Files.
