
Coordinate Reference Systems (CRS) are a critical part of survey accuracy. Even a small issue in a projection definition can result in coordinates that are significantly different from where they should be.
TPC 26.2 introduces two enhancements that help improve the reliability of CRS definitions imported from PRJ files: reading ellipse definitions directly from PRJ files and checking the sign of longitude used for the Central Meridian.
Reading Ellipse Definitions from PRJ Files
When using a PRJ file to define a survey’s Coordinate Reference System, TPC now looks for an ellipse definition within the file.
If an ellipse definition is found, TPC automatically incorporates it into the survey’s CRS.
This enhancement helps ensure that the CRS information contained in the PRJ file is more completely represented within the survey, reducing the need for manual verification and setup.
By reading the ellipse directly from the source file, TPC can more accurately reflect the projection parameters intended by the PRJ file.
Check the Sign of Longitude
One of the more difficult CRS issues to diagnose occurs when longitude signs are interpreted differently between software packages.
TPC uses the convention:
- Positive (+) longitude = West
- Negative (-) longitude = East
While this convention is used internally by TPC, it may not always match the convention used within a particular PRJ file.
If the sign of the Central Meridian is interpreted incorrectly, survey coordinates can end up dramatically displaced from their expected location.
To help identify this issue, TPC 26.2 adds additional checking when working with PRJ files so users can verify that the longitude sign being used is correct.
Why This Matters
Projection files often come from a variety of sources, including GIS systems, CAD software, GNSS software, and third-party datasets. While PRJ files are intended to simplify coordinate system setup, differences in how software handles projection parameters can occasionally create unexpected results.
