What is Traverse PC?

Traverse PC is a complete surveying program with powerful COGO tools, drawing tools, flexibility, and performance for everyday surveying and mapping. TPC can reduce the time and cost required to create professional survey maps.

Who uses Traverse PC?

TPC is used by surveyors, engineers, assessors, educators, foresters, planners, drafters, accident investigators, archaeologists, real estate agents, and many other professionals.

TPC follows the philosophy of “Practical Solutions for Today and Tomorrow.” TPC also serves as the software foundation for an active surveying business, providing practical tools and practical pricing for real-world surveying.

Does Traverse PC offer site licenses?

Yes. Site licenses can be tailored to the required number of seats. Network licenses are also available for 5, 10, or 20 seats.

Is Traverse PC easy to use?

Traverse PC takes a different approach to software usability. Instead of requiring numerous plug-ins, dozens of commands, or extensive manual study, TPC centers the workflow around interactive screens and integrated tools.

A small set of core tools provides the foundation for a wide range of surveying tasks. Tools can be combined and applied in different ways to accommodate different workflows.

Two online training sessions are included with the software, along with tutorials and step-by-step Learning Guides based on actual surveying projects.

Additional tools can be learned as needed, without requiring mastery of the entire program before beginning productive work.

How does Traverse PC work?

TPC does not limit surveying work to a pre-programmed list of tasks or force a fixed sequence of commands. Instead, TPC provides a comprehensive set of integrated tools that can be combined according to project requirements.

New workflows can be created by combining or rearranging existing tools. The approach is similar to the flexibility provided by business spreadsheets, where different tools can be combined to accomplish different tasks.

TPC provides the flexibility required for practical, real-world surveying workflows without forcing a fixed methodology.

Why choose Traverse PC?

Traverse PC provides the tools required for everyday surveying, mapping, calculations, and drafting in one integrated program, with an emphasis on practical performance, flexibility, ease of use, and affordability.

Does Traverse PC offer educational discounts?

Yes. A special Educational License is available for classroom use, along with a Student Edition for students enrolled in surveying curricula.

How many points can Traverse PC handle?

Traverse PC has no fixed survey-size limit. A built-in memory manager uses available computer memory and automatically swaps data to the hard drive when additional memory is required.

Does Traverse PC work with elevations?

Yes. Traverse PC is fully three-dimensional. Benchmarks, instrument heights, target heights, stadia measurements, and other elevation data can be used to carry elevations from point to point.

How can Traverse PC be used in the office?

TPC Desktop provides a complete office surveying environment with graphics, COGO, traversing, sideshots, elevations, adjustments, printing, plotting, and other essential surveying tools.

Support for major data collectors, field-to-finish mapping, the Point Code Table, and the TPC Drawing Engine provides a complete workflow from field data through finished drawings.

TPC Desktop provides a practical alternative to traditional CAD-based surveying workflows.

Does Traverse PC support data collectors?

Yes. The Data Collector Interface supports most major data collectors with both upload and download capabilities.

Field-to-finish mapping tools also support efficient mapping from feature codes and Point Codes.

Can Traverse PC perform geodetic computations?

Yes. TPC Desktop supports geodetic positions as well as grid coordinates. A CRS (Coordinate Reference System) establishes the relationship between geodetic and grid coordinates.

Distance and Direction types provide flexible conversion between grid, ground, and geodetic distances, areas, and directions. Project factors such as elevation and mapping angle can be applied, or corrections can be computed on a course-by-course basis.

Can Traverse PC perform Public Land Survey System computations?

Yes. TPC Desktop includes PLSS routines such as single and double proportion based on the 2009 BLM Manual of Surveying Instructions.

PLSS computations can also be performed using true bearings and ground distances.

Can Traverse PC work with other software?

Yes. TPC provides extensive data exchange capabilities for integration with other surveying, CAD, GIS, and field software.

Supported formats include user-defined ASCII coordinates, DXF, DWG, data collector files, and many other formats.

TPC can also serve as a replacement for outdated surveying software or as a user-friendly surveying and mapping solution for field crews.

Can Traverse PC be returned if the software does not fit project requirements?

Traverse PC includes a 30-day return policy. An RMA can be requested for a full refund when software is returned within 30 days of purchase.

Two included online training sessions must be completed before a software return.

TPC Trials are non-returnable/refundable.

What types of surveys can Traverse PC handle?

Traverse PC handles small traverses and large, complex surveys with tools such as multiple Traverses, point protection, search, replace, query, and standard database functions.

Supported surveying applications include:

  • Control surveys
  • Boundary surveys
  • Site surveys
  • Topographic surveys
  • Mortgage surveys
  • Construction staking
  • Curve stakeout
  • Subdivision design
  • Road layout
  • Plat checks
  • Area computations
  • And virtually any other surveying or mapping application

Does survey size need to be known before starting a project?

No fixed survey size is required. Traverse PC dynamically sizes project data as survey information is entered and the project grows.

What computer is required to run Traverse PC?

TPC Desktop is designed for Windows computers. Current system requirements should be reviewed before installation to ensure compatibility with the latest supported version of Windows.

Does Traverse PC support metric and imperial units?

Yes. Coordinate units, paper sizes, and drawing scales can be configured for metric or imperial workflows.

Existing surveys can also be converted between metric and imperial units.

What makes Traverse PC different from other land surveying software?

TPC takes a different approach to surveying, COGO, data organization, and drawing production. Integrated tools, Traverses, Views, Visible Data, Quick View, and automated drawing capabilities reduce repetitive drafting and data-management tasks.

The result is a flexible surveying workflow built around survey data rather than a traditional CAD drawing workflow.

TPC combines practical surveying tools, flexible workflows, automated mapping, and integrated data management in a single surveying environment.

Here are some of the most common questions we receive about our land survey equipment paired with Emlid RTK GNSS receivers.

What is the main difference between using Emlid receivers and the equipment I use now?

We have identified 2 main factors that set Emlid GNSS equipment apart from your current setup:

1- COST
Technology has advanced at a rapid rate over the past decade. This advancement has made manufacturing powerful, high-quality GNSS equipment much more affordable and has lowered price tags significantly for consumers. You can now purchase multiple GNSS receivers, plus land surveying software, for the price of one big box data collector.

2- CONVENIENCE
Speaking of data collectors, you can leave yours at home! Instead of your typical data collector, Emlid RTK GNSS receivers work hand-in-hand with a free mobile app called Emlid Flow (available on Android and iOS devices).

With Emlid Flow, you can perform linework and coding, stake out points and lines, and much more from your cell phone or tablet device. Eliminating a traditional data collector in lieu of a device you already carry around 24/7 is a huge selling point. Also, you save money by not investing in new, pricey data collectors.

All projects created with the Flow app are available in Emlid Flow 360 software for easy viewing on your laptop or back in the office.

For more information on Emlid Flow, watch this VIDEO.

How do Emlid receivers and apps work without cell phone coverage? What about under dense tree canopy?

Emlid receivers communicate via built-in LTE modems, BlueTooth, and LoRa radio.

Using a pair of Emlid devices as a base and rover is a great option when working in an area without cell coverage. First, you will set up your base. Then, set your first point (relative location) using your rover and Emlid Flow on your mobile device. Once you place the first point, the base and rover will communicate with each other via LoRa as you continue to plot your points.

As you work through your project, the Flow app saves your data. We recommend downloading a file manager app to save Flow data to your device’s internal memory when working without cell coverage.

You can use the same base and rover method when satellite connection is obscured, like when working under dense tree canopy.

Without a cell phone hotspot, where does Emlid Flow’s data come from to export the CSV file and where does the data go when it imports the averaged positions via CSV?

Emlid Flow always suggests several apps to be pre-installed on your cellular device or tablet to export the CSV file. If you don’t have cell coverage to send it over the Internet, you can use any file manager that works with the internal memory. We suggest File Manager+ for Android devices.

When you import the CSV file, the app suggests that you select from the internal memory of the device. It never exports or imports any CSV files from/to Emlid Reach.

**iOS devices do not require additional file manager apps.

What’s the best method to transfer CSV files to/from a Windows PC?

If Internet connection is NOT AVAILABLE, Bluetooth is the best method for transferring files to/from a Windows PC.

If Internet connection is AVAILABLE, the best way to exchange data is an account sync between the Emlid Flow/Emlid Flow 360.

We hope this information has been helpful. If you have any other questions about TPC + Emlid package deals, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re here to help you get the most out of your surveying equipment.
